Laser cutting is a form of craftsmanship providing the means to create intricate and detailed three dimensional objects in a variety of materials.

We are based in glasgow but can provide products anywhere in the world.

We hope this service will be of interest to a range of individuals including artists, architects and fashion designers to name just a few.

Click on the above photograph to visit the laser cut products...

Click on the above photograph to visit the laser cut products blog.

Using a laser cutter has a great advantage over normal machine tools as images can be cut to a very high degree of tolerance/accuracy and the process leaves behind polished edges. No more ragged edges or vibration fractures.

Click the image above to see some examples of work we have done including the wonderful clock above. (designed by Janice Smelt - Glasgow designer).

Card can be cut to a very high degree of precision due to its resistance to melting and multi directional fibre structure. The following blog has some sample projects including prototype display cases for seedbom as designed by Graphicalhouse in glasgow and manufactured by podbox.

Laser cutting and engraving timber is a service offered by Podbox laser. The maximum sheet width is 620mm. The length is unlimited due collapsable side walls in the laser machine which allow sheets to be fed through. The thickness of timber that can be cut depends on a number of factors such as flammability and the density of wood grain.

Laser engraving timber is also possible and, with a variable bed depth, the machine can be adapted to accommodate a variety of objects such as bird box, a wooden drawer front or a picture frame.

Timber is an enjoyable material to laser cut. The burning process can add texture and character to an object which is different from the sanded edge typically associated with a handworked timber object. The laser cutting process can be carefully managed to control the quality of surface finish. Power and speed of laser can be adjusted along with the pressurised air supply through the laser head to control the process.

Click on the above to visit the fabric blog.

Fabric laser cutting is one of the services offered by Podbox that pushes the boundaries of this technology. A woven fabric, by definition, relies on interlocking fine strands of material to create it’s shape. These can easily unravel with just a single broken strand so cutting through these with a laser seemed initially to be a fruitless task. However, there is a way round this! We have sourced a range of manmade woven fabrics that can be cut with laser. The laser gently heats the edge of the fabric, bonding strands together creating a seal to prevent unravelling. Delicate patterns can be achieved similar to lace or flocked fabric. These fabrics can then be used in furnishing, fashion design and a range of other crafts.

As with all forms of laser cutting, it’s important to know the limitations. The best laser cutting patterns are those which run perpendicular to the weave. The speed and power of the laser must also be carefully managed to limit burning. Careful selection of fabric is required from the outset and testing is recommended to assess burning potential.

All of the work commissioned at Podbox is bespoke and made to order. The flexibility of the technology allows traditional crafts such as fabric design to be re-imagined.

The photograph above is of a recent commission to laser cut flowers for a wedding. The individual flower heads have a modern asymmetrical design and are cut in white 3mm acrylic. This is an unusual project but so far the results have been stunning!

Click on the above image to visit our paper blog.
